The society has rallied a contingent of human rights experts. These experts are found in various discipliness across China. Since 1993, they have published more than 100 papers in press. To name just a few: China Strives to Ensure the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of its People, Promote Sound Development of International Human Rights Cause, On Human Rights in Tibet, On South-North Contest in Human Rights, A Look at Human Rights Conditions in the United States, A Look at Conditions of American Children, Thoughts on ¡°Neo-Interventionism¡± from Legal and Political Perspectives, and On America¡¯s Support for the Dalai Clique in Its Activities to Split China. In addition, members of the society¡¯s National Council have published a range of monographs on human rights. These include the Book Series of Human Rights in China, Book Series of Human Rights Worlwide, Marxist Human Rights Theory and Practices, Human Rights: a Comparison Between China and the United States, An Introduction to Human Rights, and Encyclopaedia of Human Rights in China. Published in 1998, the Book Series of Human Rights in China comprise six books running to more than one million words. They included A General Review of China¡¯s Human Rigths White Papers, Equality, Autonomy and Development ¨C Chinese Model for Protecting Human Rights of Ethnic Minority Groups, Human Rights Questions in the Sino-U.S. Relations, Women and Human Rights, An Oriental View of Human Rights, and Human Rights as Seen From the Perspective of International Law.

Under the auspices of the society, large numbers of foreign works on human rights have been translated into Chinese. Among them are Overview of World Human Rights Instruments (and a sequel of the collection), Encyclopaedia of Human Rights, A Collection of Reference Materials for Sutdy of Human Rights, and Universal Declaration of Human Rights ¨C A Common Standard of Achievement. These run to well over 10 million words.

CSHRS has sponsored various projects for research of human rights. In 1996, the society set up a group for appraisal of research projects in human rights jointly with the China Foundation for Human Rights Development (CFHRD). The group has so far provided financial assistance to scores of research projects. These projects have produced a range of research results that are conducive to formulation of China¡¯s human rights policies and enhancing popular awareness of human rights.

CSHRS has also held scores of symposiums and seminars on human rights. In October 1998, it held in Beijing an international symposium on world human rights towards the 21st century jointly with the China United Nations Association. This was the first international conference ever held in China on human rights. Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen spoke at the meeting. Also attending were more than 80 human rights experts and officials from 27 countries. On the agenda of the gathering were panel sessions on the role of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, how human rights and development are related, the the challenges possibly to arise in the new century to the cause of human rights.

On December 10, 1998, the society called a meeting to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. President Jiang Zemin sent a letter of greetings to CSHRS, in which he elaborated on China¡¯s stand on the question of human rights. More than 100 experts and officials were present.
